27-year-old Katie Bain loses her battle with cancer

MOURNERS are being asked to dress in colourful clothing for the funeral of Katie Bain at Murwillumbah this week.

The 27-year-old, whose struggle with bowel cancer was reported in the Tweed Daily News, lost her health battle on May 19.

Katie, who had moved from Kingscliff to Uki, had written her own account of her shock diagnosis last year of a disease that normally strikes much older people.

In a story she wrote in December 2015 in the Tweed Daily News, Katie said: "I hope my situation brings to light the fact that bowel cancer can affect anyone, no matter their age and that you need to take care of your health and not take it for granted.

"Life is a crazy rollercoaster," she said.

"You can either be scared of the ride or you can embrace it and scream, cry, yell and laugh through all the ups, downs and loops."

Katie is survived by her high school sweet heart Simon, parents Allan and Dianne, and sibling Max.

Her funeral will take place at All Saints Anglican Church, Murwillumbah, on Thursday, May 26 at 10am.

In lieu of flowers, mourners are asked to give donations to The Better Together Foundation which Katie helped set up to make the journey easier for "cancer warriors" over the age of 25.
