Kennys from CQ team up in Warwick for national finals
RODEO: "You only get out what you put in."
That's the life motto of cowboys Shane and Brendan Kenny which worked wonders last year.
In tandem this year, it is working again as the pair aim for back-to-back team roping titles at the APRA National Finals in Warwick.
The climax of a long season of rodeos, the Kenny, who are no relation, say that "it is what they compete all year for".
The dedication, daily practise and weekends of travelling to rodeos all across Queensland put the duo in the box seat.
Despite Brendan's home in Clermont over an hour from Shane's in Emerald, the distance is a barrier they laugh at.
"We have roped together for quite a few years now. We first started 10-15 years ago and we both know how to get the best out of it," Shane said.
"We both have big properties with rings out the back, so we can practise a bit together. If we both put the time in we will hopefully see the results.
"Brendan will come to mine a fair bit, he does a bit of work in Emerald so it works out well. Plus its not a long drive."
Adding to their favouritism going into the event, the pair recently set a new APRA record of 3.9 seconds at the Emerald Ag Show Rodeo beating a record that stood for six years.
Shane is gunning for his fourth team roping title and Brendan his third. At time of print, the pair were placed second in the team roping and Shane was second in rope and tie.
"Luckily we have both been able to win this before. It is why we do the sport at the end of the day," he said.
"We both have a job to do and back ourselves. We know how we both operate and if we stick to the game plan we know we can do it again.
"Before we go out we will visualise what needs to be done and go from there."
So far, the Kenny's have one placing, equal second, with rounds to go on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
