Child charged with deliberately lighting fires

A 13-YEAR-OLD boy has been charged in relation to three fires in Amiens last month.

Between Friday, September 1, and Monday, September 17, the rural fire brigade attended three fires on Bapaume Rd.

Police charged the juvenile with deliberately lighting a fire to endanger property.

Stanthorpe Senior Sergeant Gerard Brady said all three fires had the potential to cause damage to neighbouring houses and crops.

"Some of these kids don't understand the ramifications and the consequences of what they're doing," he said.

"Although they're juveniles, it's still treated as a very serious offence."

He said police would allege the 13-year-old was responsible for all three fires.

"Police spoke to another 10-year-old child who was in the vicinity, but police don't believe he was responsible."

The 13-year-old will front Children's Court on October 16.

Police do not believe this incident is linked to any other fires in the region this year.
