Boy politician storms on to council at just 21

TO ANY other 21-year-old, politics might be a bore but to Lachlan Brennan, it's his calling.

The Goondiwindi resident topped the local council polls, securing his spot as the region's youngest ever politician.

"I've always been absolutely involved in Goondiwindi," Mr Brennan said.

"And they say 'to make the biggest change possible, enter into politics'."

Mr Brennan blitzed his competition, leading the polls with 4396 votes.

He found voters were excited by his candidacy, despite him being only four years out of high school.

"I was surprised by the amount of support," he said.

"I expected people would question me, but it seems they wanted a youth's vision."

Mr Brennan first entered politics at 16, joining the LNP and eventually working for Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg.

Mr Springborg was also 21 when he was elected a state member.

"I think the best advice, and the same advice I received at his age, was 'you have two ears, one mouth; use them in proportion'," he said.

"You can't always do everything that they want you to do and the important thing is to be respectful."

Mr Brennan grew up in Goondiwindi and his family has lived in the area since the mid-1800s.

His mother runs a not-for-profit childcare centre and his father is in management at an agricultural supply company.

Mr Brennan said his first point of business would be settling in before focusing attention on Goondiwindi's potential tourism opportunities.

"I look forward to working with the council. I think we have a great team with people from all different backgrounds and age," he said.
