Killarney Cutters club desperately seeks officials

RUGBY LEAGUE: Sunday will be D Day for the Killarney Cutters.

The club, which has fielded teams in the Border Rugby League for two decades, needs a committee so the young men of the town can continue playing for the hometown team.

Club vice-president Dion Galloway has played for the Cutters for the past nine seasons and said there were not enough at the first annual general meeting on Sunday to hold a meeting.

"Many of the executive are not standing again so we definitely need new people, not just for the Killarney club but to have a team in the BRL,” he said.

"The Cutters is a big thing for the town. It would be sad to see the club fold.

"The numbers at the meeting this Sunday will be a deciding factor about whether the club goes forward. Killarney should be able to field a team if we have a committee.”

The meeting is at 10am this Sunday at the Killarney Recreation Centre and all welcome.

Galloway is on the money when he states that Killarney is the only club to field a team under its own steam each season since the BRL started in 1997.

Killarney and Stanthorpe have been involved in the league each year but this season Stanthorpe fielded a joint team with Texas.

Ray Wagner and Leejay Cooper have played many seasons for the Cutters and were co-coaches in 2016.

"Leejay and I are keen to coach again and believe we can form a team,” Wagner said.

With the withdrawal of Wallangarra after the closure of the town's abattoir, the BRL was back to four teams late last season. Information from president James Kelly on 0423 395964.
