Killarney Cutters urgently need wins if they want to play finals footy
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Killarney Cutters have a bye this week which is a chance to regroup for the second half of the season.
At the half-way mark, Killarney has two competition points, three behind equal third placed Stanthorpe/Texas and Wallangarra.
The draw between Stanthorpe/Texas and Wallangarra at the weekend was nearly worth another win as it now means Killarney has to record two more wins than the third-placed teams to secure a top-four spot.
With Tenterfield and Inglewood virtually assured of major semi-final spots, there is not only a battle for the bottom two spots in the top-four but also third place and the right to host the minor semi final.
Killarney co-coach Ray Wagner was happy the Cutters had a squad of 18 on Sunday after struggling for numbers in some games this season.
“Brett Lambert and Jesse Wallace again played strongly for our team,” he said.
Lock Josh Lucas scored four tries and won players’ player for Tenterfield.
Tenterfield president Brendan Minns said it was a strong, physical game.
“Killarney has got some good young players coming through, including Jacob Grayson,” he said.
“Jacob also played for Border in the under-18 game.
“There was a pretty good crowd on Sunday considering the freezing cold conditions.”
Lucas, Brett Battersby and Coedie Tandy received the Tenterfield club player of the year points.
In the TRL, Border beat Highfields 24-20 in the under-18 curtain raiser at Killarney on Sunday.
Zak Wilmot was player of the match for Border with Lloyd Kisby not far behind.
The Border U18s play Warwick Cowboys on Sunday at 11.30am at Father Ranger Oval.
The next game for Killarney will be against Wallangarra on June 25 at Charlie Andrews Oval and an important game for the finals chances of both teams.
