Killarney never gave up despite harrowing odds

RYAN McIvor was one of the stars as the Warwick Cowboys beat the Killarney Cutters 42-6 in the Xylon Smith Memorial Game at Charlie Andrews Oval on Saturday.

Killarney scored first with a try to captain-coach John Trindall and conversion by Dion Galloway.

The Cowboys scored next and led 16-6 at half-time.

It was all Warwick in the second half, but Killarney never gave up as they played in memory of a popular former teammate.

McIvor and Killarney forward Craig Pettiford won the best player awards.

In the reserve-grade game, Warwick beat Tenterfield 28-18.

Josh McIntosh played strongly at hooker.

Brendan Minns and Jackson Daniels were outstanding for the Tigers.

Killarney fielded a women's league tag team for the first time and went down 70-12 to the 2014 premiers.

Lara Brackin and Carlee O'Mara both had great games for the Cutters.

Meg Landers continued her outstanding form from last year to lead the way for the Tigers.

Killarney volunteer John Towells said it was a great day of football played in the right spirit.

"The Killarney men went well but just ran out of puff at the end," he said.

"The Cowboys looked a well-drilled side. The Killarney players enjoyed playing against some of the Cowboys who once played for Inglewood or Texas in the Border competition."

Towells said Killarney young guns Blake Graham, Robert Price and Toe Ralph all shone for the Cutters.
