Killarney polocrosse on the rise after lean period

CLUB IN FOCUS:

After 61 years, Killarney Polocrosse Club is in the middle of a resurgence.

Two years ago, Killarney was hosting a carnival each year, but not fielding teams.

Now the club has one open team which was runner-up in G-grade at Goondiwindi two weekends ago.

Club vice-president Col Bloomfield recalled riding his pony to the polocrosse at Killarney 61 years ago.

"Like all clubs, we have our ups and downs," Bloomfield said.

"The highest membership was in the 1980s.

"I recall we had six juniors and three open players

in Queensland teams in 1986."

Current president Haydn Lamb was one of the Killarney state players of

the era.

Laura Eyers is the current club secretary and Kerri Lamb is the treasurer.

The Killarney club hosted more than 40 teams at its carnival in April, at which the Australian men's and women's teams play as a warm-up to three men's and women's Tests at Morgan Park.

The Gold Coast club has held its carnival at Killarney for the past eight years, initially due to waterlogged fields and then after its facilities at Carrara were taken over as part of facility development for the Commonwealth Games.

Each year, the Gold Coast club hosts one or two carnivals at Killarney right in the centre of town.
