Killarney Pony Club has major weekend planned
PONY CLUB: The Killarney and District Hack and Pony Club will host its annual competition this weekend at the Killarney Showgrounds.
The upgraded and expanded events include campdraft, gymkhana, barrel race, showjumping and dressage.
The action starts at 8.30am Saturday with showjumping, dressage and campdrafting.
Competition will go all day and then resume at 9am Sunday with the formal gymkhana.
The club has 70 members and holds monthly rallies at the Killarney Showgrounds.
Brett McKenzie, of Emu Vale, is the Killarney club president and said the club had a "new” clubhouse for this weekend's event.
"The flood in 2011 resulted in the Killarney Show Pavilion being condemned and rather than the show society spending a lot of money on rebuilding or demolishing the pavilion, the pony club secured funding and inkind support from businesses in Killarney and across the Southern Downs to move the building to a new position on the eastern side of the showgrounds.
"The building is now our clubhouse and has been lifted out of flood reach.”
The pony club has storage facilities under the clubhouse for trailers and equipment. Decks have been put around two sides of the building and a training room, club office and canteen facilities established.
"We still have to fit out some of the rooms and are applying for grants and have increased our event program in the past two years to support our fund-raising,” he said.
All welcome to the weekend events which are expected to attract a crowd of 200. Canteen will operate.
