Kimmince could feature in AFL final
AUSSIE RULES: Delissa Kimmince is ready if the call comes to play for the Brisbane Lions against Adelaide in the first AFLW grand final on Saturday at Metricon Stadium at the Gold Coast.
After starting the season late due to cricket commitments, she has been the team emergency for most of the season. There are 16 players on the field, six interchange players and one emergency.
With the Lions suffering few injuries in their rise to the top of the points table, Kimmince has received limited opportunities.
She was called into the half-back line 30 minutes before the Lions game against Bulldogs at Brendale.
"I went on the field after five minutes and was delighted to pass the ball to a teammate who passed it back for me to kick into the forward line early on,” she said.
"Those touches settled me down a bit. I really enjoyed the chance to play AFL footy.
"If we can control our nerves and do the little things we talk about at training right in the grand final, we can definitely win. We beat them by three points in fixtures.”
Due to the repair work on the Gabba cricket pitch after the Adele concert, the ground is not available so the grand final is at 1pm tomorrow at the Gold Coast on the same program as the Suns.
"This is a great chance for the fans to watch an AFL grand final, who knows a women's grand final may never be played out of Melbourne again,” she said.
Kimmince will travel with the Lions squad to the Gold Coast today and train at the stadium.
She is preparing for the possibility that she could be called up to play at any time.
"I would love to play in the grand final,” she said.
If she is part of a winning team, Kimmince will be one of only a few sportswomen to win national competition in two sports after her T20 cricket success.
The inaugural AFLW competition will finish this weekend and Kimmince will then play her second season for Yeronga in the club women's team.
