Allora Kindy kicks off reading with award Challenge

ALLORA C&K Community Kindy is just one Queensland school getting excited about reading during the Premier's Reading Challenge from August 15 to 28.

Over the two weeks of the reading challenge, kindy families are being encouraged to read at least 10 books, as well as reading at kindy.

The challenge, which coincides with Book Week from August 22 to 28, is a statewide initiative for school children up to Grade 9 that kindy teacher Fiona Milburn said was a good starting point for learning to read.

"There will be a certificate award to them through the Premier's Challenge," Ms Milburn said.

"Because literacy is obviously very important, getting children early on to engage in reading, they have a better vocabulary and language development.

"Through our literacy program we start the kids reading and it's a real head start for school."
