Kristy inspires with her determination after serious injury

SPORTS VIEW: KRISTY Banks inspired all with her words at the Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star Awards night on Monday.

She spoke of her dream to be a jockey from when she was a young girl and then her first ride at Roma when she came fourth.

Kristy spoke of the race fall which changed her life and the early realisation that she was in trouble.

Even before she was transferred from Toowoomba to hospital in Brisbane, she had been told she would need a wheelchair to get around.

During her recovery, she decided to barrel race and recalled her husband Dale Groves carrying her on to a plane to fly to Rockhampton to buy the horse which has taken her to barrel racing success.

Plenty of footballers become coaches but one thing is sure, Kristy Banks won't become a racehorse trainer. Some sportsmen and women simply don't want to go along the coaching/training road. Just as well they don't all want to do the same jobs in retirement.

Dale's memories

DALE Groves may have been at the junior sports awards as Kristy's husband but was the centre of one question.

It was about the Warwick Rodeo and the horse-free rodeo during equine influenza where the events were bull and steer rides and that was just about it.

Dale is one of the few bull riders in Australia to have an experience with two bulls at the one time. He bit the dust and his bull turned on him and at the same time, a gate opened and a second bull raced into the arena. Shades of the bull fights of Europe but he ended up with only a few stitches and jumped on another bull the next night.

The question also talked about the Gatton Hawks, Dale also played TRL footy for Gatton and even attracted a bit of attention from NRL clubs in his youth.

Harry's hopes

EACH of the monthly winners impressed at Monday night's dinner and I will just mention one from our little interview segments.

Harry Sullivan gave me the best answer I have ever had about whether he wants to play in the big time.

He sure does but he did add that many want to but only a few are lucky enough to make it.

If you win the best player award at the Queensland under-16 championships, you must be in there with a chance.

It was also impressive to see all the enthusiasm he has for playing the second half of the rugby league season with the Warwick Cowboys and his dream to win a premiership with his hometown club in the under-18s. Currently it is rugby union at Marist Brothers Ashgrove but the school rugby season finishes early.

Interesting he is a hooker in rugby league and inside centre in rugby union. A bit like current Melbourne Rebels coach Tony McGahan who was a half in league and centre in union when living here.

Reporter Michael Cormack will give a few insights into the thoughts of our monthly winners in next week's Weekly which will be in mailboxes and distribution points on Wednesday.

Cup victory

AS a Shane Watson fan, I felt the nerves on Sunday night when he came out to bat with only a handfull of runs to get for the Aussies to win the cup. He could have gone for the big shot and would have been criticised for another irresponsible shot if he got out.

Instead, he took it steady and with Steve Smith to get the Aussies home with seven wickets in hand.

Watson has been one of our best one-day players in the past decade and good to see a Queenslander sharing success.
