Kyrgios back for another tough ride

NICK Kyrgios has been cleared of illness and will contest the Miami Open this week - with the chance of a belated clash with Roger Federer.

Like Federer, Kyrgios has a first-round bye before facing either South Korean Hyeon Chung or Damir Dhuzhur, of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Beyond that, the difficulty of the 12th seed's projected draw increases substantially with every round.

Forced out of an Indian Wells quarter-final appointment with Federer last week because of food poisoning, Kyrgios could face Ivo Karlovic, David Goffin or David Ferrer, top seed Stan Wawrinka or Alexander Zverev in successive matches.

And then rampant Federer in the semi-finals.

Ranked 16th in the world, Kyrgios has been elevated four places in the seedings with the absence of several players, notably world No 1 Andy Murray and six-time Miami champion Novak Djokovic, who both have elbow soreness.

Wallowing Bernard Tomic will face a qualifier as he attempts to avoid a fourth successive first-round defeat ahead of a second-round meeting with Spanish 14th seed Roberto Bautista-Agut.

Jordan Thompson has drawn emergent Japanese left-hander Yoshihito Nishioka.

In the women's draw, Ash Barty faces Eugenie Bouchard with the chance of a second-round tilt at fellow Queenslander Sam Stosur.

Sitting at a career-high No 90, Barty seeks to build on Malaysian Open victory as Stosur enjoys a firstr-round bye.

Ajla Tomljanovic plays American CiCi Bellis for the right to challenge Indian Wells champion Elena Vesnina while Daria Gavrilova will play either Yanina Wickmayer or Lucie Safarova after a first-round bye.

Serena Williams, who has surrendered the world No 1 ranking to Angelique Kerber for a second time, will not play because of chronic knee soreness.
