Ladies in Red stir up afternoon for the Allora Scope Club

THE Allora Scope Club's annual afternoon tea on Saturday, May 3, was well patronised. Many people travelled from afar, including the Ballina and Wynnum Scope clubs, along with guests from Inglewood, Stanthorpe, Toowoomba and places in between.

Entertainment was provided by the band, On Eagles Wings, the Acason and O'Dea families, and two talented local dancers, Mary Higgins and Cassidy Henry.

The theme for the day was "Ladies in Red" and many took the opportunity to air their wardrobe of red, the Ballina table taking the prize for the most red outfits.

Our thanks go to Harvey World Travel, Hallow World, for donating the main raffle prize - a weekend for two at the Gold Coast, won by Allora's Glennis Bailey.

Funding support cheques were presented to Matthew Lawson of Youngcare, Gayle Sternbeck of Allora Blue Care Day Respite, Cathy Cowley of St Vincent de Paul, Robyn Westerman of the Allora State School, and the Allora Chaplaincy committee. Other donations will be made at the Allora Scope Club's change-over lunch in July to St Patrick's School, Allora Show Society, Allora Kindergarten, Kairos and the Toowoomba Hospice.

The Scope Club is grateful for the support of IGA, Woolworths, Coles of Warwick and Percy's Fruit on Wood St towards the afternoon tea, and also the volunteer support by the staff Suncorp in Warwick during the event.

Members are now looking enthusiastically to next year's afternoon tea in 2015.

Campdraft All Class

ALLORA and District Campdraft Association ran a successful campdraft on the weekend of the April 26-27.

Saturday started with the Westco Maiden A and the Gordon Country and Allora Pharmacy Maiden B draft, with about 110 competitors in each. ADCA member Michael Dwan riding his stallion, Brown Two Way, was the eventual winner after a run-off with Glenmorgan competitor Michael Hayes riding Waderman. His first round score of 90 also earned him the prize for highest scoring ADCA member over the weekend. The cut-out was won by Roberta Fitzgerald of Toowoomba riding 'Sally' following a run-off with three others all tied on 23. Michael Hiscock from Maffra in Victoria, who was last year's winner of the Warwick Gold Cup, was in the judge's seat for the Maiden A, the Restricted Open and the Open.

The Maiden B draft, judged by Stew Craig of Toowoomba, was also decided after a run-off between Michael Hayes riding 'Connor' and Ben Wade from Roma on 'Jackie'. This time Michael clinched victory and also won the highest cut-out with a 23.

The Chuck Wagon Fit Outs Juvenile Campdraft for competitors 13 and under 17 had a number of riders score over 80 with another runoff required between Jack Hayes riding 'Phil' and Billy Shep

pard riding 'Shania', both on 87. Jack was the eventual winner and also tied for 3rd and 4th places on his other horse, Cinema, with ADCA member Joe McMahon riding Milly, which earned them both a prize for highest scoring Juvenile on a Maiden Horse.

Run-offs seemed to be the order of the day and two junior riders, John Schumann riding Sheedy's Indiana and Thomas Wells on Convert, both scoring 80 in the Clearview Equine Junior Draft. John claimed the blue ribbon this time by a point. Local rider and ADCA member Kira Holmes won the prize for the highest-scoring young lady rider.

A total of 28 horses lined up for the Coolum ASH Stud Restricted Open draft, with Michael Hiscock back in the saddle to judge. This was a one-round event or "shootout" with Michael Hayes riding Delacy snaring a win by one point on 90. Craig Sheppard from Peak Crossing and Sterling claimed the cut-out with a 24.

Following the Restricted Open a cheque was presented to Mr Hemmo de Vries of Qld Fire and Rescue Services, which enabled the purchase of a defibrillator to go on the fire truck based in Allora. Several of the local QFRS members brought the truck onto the grounds to show their appreciation of the donation from ADCA, which was from funds raised at the 2013 Campdraft.

The Talgai Homestead Novice draft on Saturday afternoon boasted 80 riders, 30 of whom scored 86 or better, Warwick rider Aaron Williamson and Bow in first place on 174. Four horses tied for second on 173, including Clintonvale cattle donor Kevin Ryan, Warwick rider Ivan Ardrey and Jim Daley, ADCA vice president, riding Coolum Flute, and also his father Peter's horse, Peringa Eyeliner. Darren Rafton from Mount Marshall won the cut-out on Felice with a cut-out score of 24 in the first round and rode into 6th place overall with 172.

A total of 110 horses nominated for the T and G Supafloats Open Draft, 15 horses reaching the final with a score of 87 or better. Michael Hayes and Mercedes led the finalists with a 91. However, the eventual winner was Michael (Buddy) Tattam from St George riding Station Masters Girlfriend on 178 with two very consistent rounds of 89, followed very closely by lady riders, Tanya Bellingham from Warwick riding Lil Clinka and Anna Hudson from Tenterfield riding Wannalook Snowonder, both on 177.

The last event for the weekend as the weather deteriorated was the H-Products Encouragement draft with 20 riders, won by Ellie McKenna, from Killarney on Justify.

The Warwick Credit Union Bareback Cut-out was once again a feature event on Saturday night, providing great entertainment as some very well-disguised riders dared to try to cut out a beast without the aid of a saddle while sporting challenging costume attire! The overall winner was ADCA member Max Turley (alias Austin Powers), which was fitting as the crowd had observed a minute silence before the cut-out in honour of Max's father Peter, who died late last year. Peter had been a long time member of ADCA and was always on hand to help at our Campdraft over the years.

The committee and members of ADCA thanks our generous sponsors and donors who make our campdraft a very popular and successful event. The ADCA funds go to Aussie Helpers, and to other charities such as CareFlight.

Allora Show Society members provided sustenance to riders and workers and put on a great dinner on Saturday night.
