Last day of kindy signals start of new journey

FOR many young children, kindergarten is their first big step into the real world.

New faces, new rules and new experiences at every turn.

Yesterday signalled the end of that kindergarten experience for an excited batch of children at St Mary's Kindergarten in Palmerin Street.

In the new year, those children will take the next step to Prep and the start of their formal education at different schools around the district.

Teaching director Marie Sullivan said it was a kindergarten teacher's role to help the children feel connected to that next step in their education journey.

"This year for these kids has been about social and emotional development,” Mrs Sullivan said.

"We provide a nurturing environment so that at the end of the year, they'll have matured and have the confidence needed to take that next step.

"The children learn to share, take turns and work with lots of different peers and personalities.”

Mrs Sullivan said it was a journey for the whole family.

"We provide a lot of support to both kids and parents,” she said.

"Especially with the next step to Prep, we have lots of visits to classrooms and to the playground.

"We have all the different uniforms to try on and we give the kids the chance to play school.”

Vacancies for St Mary's Kindergarten in 2018 are available and orientation sessions and interviews will be held in early December.
