Drunk driver crashes car into pub

ELEVEN people, including a baby resting in a pram, escaped injury after a car flew off the road and smashed into a quiet country pub.

Police said the car being driven by an allegedly drunk driver ploughed into the pub near Laidley just before last drinks on Friday night.

About 11.20pm, while patrons and staff were winding down for the 12am closing time, the car smashed into the bistro of the Mulgowie Hotel, causing significant damage.

Police said the driver allegedly returned a breath alcohol reading of .107 - more than twice the legal limit.

Mulgowie Hotel bar tender and cook Aleisha Field said the crash impact was so severe it pushed the roof up, and "at least half" the hotel would have to be rebuilt.

"There were 11 people here - patrons and the owners, and the car stopped about four or five metres from a baby in a pram," Ms Field said.

"There were a couple of others nearby too and the force of the smash pushed everything in."

Owner Simon Emmerson said lots of hard work meant the meal area and bar had re-opened over the weekend.

"We would like to thank all the locals that helped out on Saturday cleaning up," Mr Emmerson said.

"Our builder drove from Gympie and worked well into the night so we could re-open the dining area."

Police said the sedan was travelling north on Mulgowie Rd when it left the road and crashed into a front awning and wall of the hotel. All four occupants of the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

The driver, a Malaysian national, is expected to appear before Gatton Magistrates Court on June 4.
