Last over win in final game

STEVE Hawthorne paid credit to paceman Brodie Frizzell for the Stunned Mullets final over victory against Max's XI in the Condamine Sports Club Australia Day Cricket Carnival.

After the morning semi-finals, Stunned Mullets and Max's XI played in the 1pm final at Slade Park yesterday.

John Cleary scored two centuries in the carnival but was dismissed by Frizzell in the third over of the innings.

Frizzell also dismissed Craig Cantwell and Hawthorne dismissed Mitchell Shield captain Shaun "Robbo" O'Leary.

"Brodie bowled well early and Simon Young steadied the ship with his batting," Hawthorne, who shared the captaincy with Troy Welsh, said.

"We were also worried about Robbo."

Max's XI scored 83 but Cleary made sure the run chase would not be easy taking 1-7 off his four overs at the top of the Stunned Mullets innings.

The score was 5-60 with five overs to go and Dean Butler charged the bowling to hit a three through cover.

Butler was then caught by Dan Murphy and the score was 6-73 with two overs to go.

It came down to the last over with Simon Young and Frizzell taking two singles and then Frizzell turned the ball behind square leg for two to win the carnival.

Young finished with 27 not out and said he enjoyed chasing targets.

"It was hard to see in the dark conditions, spin was easier than the pace," he said.

It was the fourth carnival win for Stunned Mullets and one of their closest battles.

Max's XI captain Ben Sullivan said his side was happy to get to the final and catch up with friends at the carnival.

It was the seventh carnival for Max's XI and their first final.

Mitch's/Small's XI recorded their third third place in the carnival.

Team member Darren Small said he was now 51 years of age and wanted a carnival victory by age 55.

"We are working on a big name recruit," Small said.

"Matt Hagenbach has been trying to get former State player Trevor Barsby to play with us for 20 years," Small said.

"Trevor won't come over the hill."

Luckily the rain held off yesterday during the final.
