Laura and Clare in Australian Conference netball win

NETBALL: Laura Geitz is on target to lead the Coffee Club Queensland Firebirds to a third victory in the ANZ Championships.

The Allora goalkeeper was the on-court leader for the Firebirds first victory and last year captained the team to another championship win.

Last night, the Firebirds became the Australian Conference champions for the second year running after they defeated New South Wales Swifts 63-52 in Brisbane.

They will now host Southern Steel from New Zealand in a semi final on Sunday at noon for the right to host the grand final in a fortnight.

Geitz and former Warwick West State School student Clare McMeniman are the Southern Downs connection in the team.

If they win the championships, they will become the first team to win three championships and the first to win back-to-back titles.

The Swifts led early on Monday night but the Firebirds quickly reasserted control and led 16-12 at quarter-time.

Geitz and McMeniman were dominant in defence as always and didn’t give the Swifts any chance. The defenders are showing the form that should see both in Australian Diamonds colours again this year.
