Laura Geitz sculpture to be put up at entertainment centre
THE sporting stature of Allora legend Laura Geitz is glowing even brighter with the announcement a life-size sculpture will sit outside the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
It was at the entertainment centre at Boondall on Sunday when Geitz led the Queensland Firebirds to a ANZ Championship victory - the first back-to-back victory by any team in the decade the championships have been played.
The win made the Firebirds the most successful team from either side of the Tasman in ANZ Championship history.
It was athletics and swimming in which Geitz first impressed at Allora State School before she tried netball and was identified by Netball Queensland officials as a player of the future when she was a student at The Scots PGC College.
Today, a Netball Queensland official said while some of the planning for the sculpture had to be finalised, the plan was for it to be placed at Boondall opposite a sculpture of Brisbane Bullets basketball legend Leroy Loggins.
Geitz told metropolitan media late this week that she was shocked by the move and initially didn't believe it.
Yesterday, the Firebirds met thousands of fans at King George Square and Geitz was one player everyone wanted to talk to.
Geitz has stressed the importance of her family in helping her achieve in netball.
"Down the years, I have had a lot of support from my family and also my husband Mark's family,” she said.
"Mark and I come up to Allora when we can. I was lucky to live my childhood at Allora.”
As well as her success with the Firebirds, Geitz has captained the Australian Diamonds to World Cup and Commonwealth Games gold medals. She has two gold medals at World Cup level, gold and silver in the Commonwealth Games and won the Liz Ellis Diamond in 2011, the most prestigious award in the sport in Australia.
It is believed the sculpture will be the first of a sportswoman at a major stadium in Brisbane.
