Laura’s Firebirds aiming for 21st win in succession

NETBALL: The Laura Geitz captained Queensland Firebirds will host the Adelaide Thunderbirds at noon Sunday in ANZ Championship netball in Brisbane.

Last weekend, the Firebirds beat the Fever to extend their winning record to 20 after a recent victory against the Swifts which was a replay of last season’s grand final.

In the last game between the Firebirds and Thunderbirds, the Queensland team won 58-46.

The Thunderbirds last win over the Firebirds was in Round 2 in 2014 when they won 55-48 in Brisbane. Down the years, the Firebirds and Thunderbirds have met in Brisbane on eight occasions with the Thunderbirds holding a six win, two loss, record.

The Firebirds have only lost 11 matches on their home court in Brisbane since 2008, six to the Thunderbirds, four to the Vixens and once to the Fever.

Former Warwick West State School student Clare McMeniman is also part of the successful Firebirds team.

The Queensland team currently has the ANZ Championship consecutive win record of 20 matches but will need to beat a tough Adelaide side if they wish to have a 21st victory celebration on Sunday.
