Learning to pick up chicks

JORDAN Briggs is learning how to pick up chicks ... literally.

With male partners being in short supply, the teenager finds himself lifting about 10 girls in this weekend's dance concert.

He had a run-through with the girls at the dress rehearsals on the weekend, learning how to execute lifts with a face full of tulle from the tutus.

And at 170cm-plus, it's a long way up for some of his partners, many of whom are being lifted by a male dancer for the first time.

The lanky 15-year-old took up dancing last year, although he's no stranger to the stage, having performed as Joseph in the School of Total Education musical last month.

Is he uncomfortable about touching the girls in quite personal places?

"You get used to it," he said.

He grabs one girl around the torso and holds her with his other hand on her thigh.

Another has her bottom on his shoulder while he lifts her, and he lifts another aloft by holding both her legs while his head rests on the tummy of her outstretched body.

Appropriately, that ballet is to the song You Raise Me Up.

That is one of 35 dances that will be performed at this weekend's Killarney School of Dance recital at the Warwick Town Hall by about 200 students.

Two dress rehearsals were held at the weekend - the first half on Saturday and the second half yesterday.

The concert is sure to intrigue audiences with its magical and mystery theme.

Genres on show include ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, funk, acrobatics, singing and drama.

The variety of dazzling costumes in the show is amazing in itself, with an amazing array of elegant tutus and colourful jazz and tap outfits adding an edge to the program.
