Let bunker make call on 'iffy' tackles

SPORTSVIEW with Gerard Walsh

WHAT is the point in having a bunker in rugby league if they can't look at incidents like the Sia Soliola tackle on Billy Slater in the NRL last weekend.

The tackle didn't look good on television but he was only placed on report.

Many have said Soliola should have been sent off as it ended Slater's night.

What is wrong with the referee going to the bunker and even making a call that the player should be sent off, just like he makes a call on tries as he refers it to the bunker?

A send off can cost a team a win which some would say happened when Sonny Bill Williams was sent off in a recent All Blacks loss to the British Lions in rugby union.

Player of the match

I HAVE long believed the best player award winner in a game or tournament does not necessarily have to come from the winning side.

So I was delighted to see that only four of the nine best player award winners at the Goondiwindi Polocrosse Club carnival at the weekend were from the winning team.

There was controversy after a New South Wales player from the losing side won the player of the match in the Second State of Origin game.

The problem with State of Origin player of the match selection is the people making the decision are not just sitting there making a decision on the hooter, one of them is also chasing player interviews.

Not many can do two things perfectly at the same time.
