Leukemia survivor tells her story at special lunch

SHE may only remember snippets of her early childhood, but Kelsey Burt is well aware how lucky she is to be alive.

At three-and-a-half, Kelsey was diagnosed with leukemia.

"I don't really remember much of it, but I know it was absolute hell for my mum and dad," Kelsey said.

By age six, she had won the fight against the disease and was on the road to recovery.

Kelsey went on to become involved with the Leukaemia Foundation and the young ambassadors program and will feature as a guest speaker at the Leukaemia Foundation's Warwick branch 30th anniversary lunch next week, where she will talk about her experience.

"The foundation provided so much financial and emotional support for my family when I was going through it all so I want to give back," she said.

She said one of her messages to other families battling leukemia, was "not to forget about the other children".

"As I got older I felt really bad for my brother, who was only 17 months older than me, because he missed out on so much because I couldn't do a lot of things with a compromised immune system," she said.

"I always hoped he wouldn't resent me for that because he did lose a chunk of his childhood.

"So that's why I say remember the other children need a day where they are the centre of attention too."

She will speak alongside other cancer survivors at the lunch on Thursday, June 20.

Tickets are just $10 and include a hot lunch, entertainment and the inspirational stories of a bunch of survivors.

The lunch starts at 11am, and is being held in St Mary's Hall.

RSVP to Doreen on 46648119 by Wednesday June 19.
