Fines galore: Downs drivers turn the road into a racetrack

AFTER one of the most successful Leyburn Sprints weekends in the history of the event, police have expressed their disappointment with the behaviour of a large number of road users.

Acting Senior Constable Steven Gibb of Leyburn police said they would firstly like to thank the organisers, competitors and spectators.

"Overall the event was well run and largely incident free," he said.

"However we ran a concurrent traffic operation on the roads around Leyburn which have yielded disappointing results.

"So far we have had over 120 traffic infringement notices, including 93 speeding offences.

"This is a really diappointing results considering last year there were only 55 speeding offences."

Act Snr Const Gibb said yesterday was the first day of Road Safety week and police would like to remind motorists to remember the fatal five - speed, distraction, drink driving, driving tired and seatbelts.

"In addtion to those speeding offences we had four drivers failed roadside drugs tests, one driver registering .119 on a roadside breath test and we found five unlicensed drivers."

The operation concluded last night, not before a 52 year-old Cambooya man was clocked travelling at 177kmh in a 100kmh zone on the Toowoomba-Karara Road yesterday morning, which will mean an automatic loss of license and a $1137 fine.

Act Snr Const Gibb said given the recent fatality on that stretch of road police are extremely disappointed with this infrigement.

"We implore motorists to observe the road rules for their safety and the safety of other road users."
