Warwick businessman's life work recognised by industry
ONE of Warwick's key players has been recognised for his lifetime of dedication to the trucking industry.
The Queensland Trucking Association named Ross Fraser of Frasers Livestock Transport the winner of the 2017 Industry Excellence Award.
Mr Fraser said he had not nominated himself for the accolade but was thrilled to collect the award in Brisbane at the weekend.
"We've had a young achiever of the year award before, and it's an honour for me to have been nominated and recognised," Mr Fraser said.
"Frasers is a member of the association as well as the Livestock Transport Association of Queensland which is now an affiliate of the QTA.
"I've been involved in the industry all my life and we do try to make things better for our staff and better for the industry as a whole.
"It's really encouraging to see the government recognising how important the trucking industry is to the economy of Australia."
Mr Fraser first joined the company, started by his parents Charles and Edna in 1944, when he was just 13 years old.
"It was our father's business so all three of us - me and my brothers Les and Peter - have been involved for a long time," he said.
"I used to spend a lot of time with my father and helped at the sales and when I left school at 1 I got more involved.
"I pretty much hit the ground running because there wasn't a lot about the business I didn't know about.
"But what's drawn us to and kept us in the business is our love of working with livestock.
"We've been around livestock all of our lives and it's something we still enjoy doing," he said.
After 73 years Frasers has grown substantially, thanks in part to technology making it easier than ever to do business.
"The biggest change is the way in which we do business and the technology available today," Mr Fraser said.
"There's been huge advancement in communications with drivers and satellite tracking, which means we can communicate with our drivers directly and give them information when they're in the truck.
"Some people complain about mobile phones, but I find those people who do have not had to run a business without one."
Mr Fraser said the success of the company, including expanding from the Warwick headquarters, was also due to the hard work and dedication of long-term staff.
"We employ 110 people and cart fourmillion head of livestock across sevenmillion kilometres of road every year," he said.
"It's been steady growth over about 30 years with acquiring depots, the first in Goondiwindi and then Roma and Rockhampton and most recently in Toowoomba.
"One of the most rewarding things is the retention of the long-term staff; for instance, we have third-generation drivers with us.
"Our dedicated staff have been paramount in longevity and success of the company."
Although humbled by the award, Mr Fraser said it would be back to business as usual after the win for Frasers.
"It's beautiful rain we're having around at the moment and cattle and commodity prices are good," he said.
"It means our customers can make a dollar from what they're doing, which is good for our business, the industry and the whole of Australia."
