Lift weights to lift your mood

JUST Sports 'n' Fitness Goodna centre manager Jane Milanov firmly believes exercise is just as vital for mental health as it is for physical wellness.

"As part of the mental health week Just Sports 'n' Fitness Goodna will be giving away 14-day passes and encouraging all members to bring a friend down," he said.

"Weight loss, weight gain, fitness and toning up your body aren't the only reasons people should be joining the gym in this day and age.

"Exercising for 30 minutes a day has been proven to reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression and working out regularly improves energy, sleeping patterns and moods by releasing the feel good chemicals in our brain."

The gym manager said like many people he had experienced the challenges of living with mental health issues.

"Anxiety and depression are the most common mental illnesses that affect one in five people throughout Australia on a daily basis," he said.

"Mental illness can affect anyone, most people will know someone who has experienced some kind of mental health issue."

He said the close-knit gym community at Goodna was designed to support members with their mental and physical health goals.
