Lightning indeed strikes twice for Route 5 residents
A RESOLUTION to the dispute between Ergon Energy and residents along the proposed route five powerline could be one step closer.
Ergon has determined a line five route for the Warwick to Stanthorpe powerlines within the 2km wide corridor initially proposed.
The four other routes have previously been determined and Ergon can now compare all five routes evenly before deciding which one to build on.
Residents along the route five corridor have previously argued they were not properly consulted by Ergon and it was unfair to compare the corridor with the other four specified line routes.
Project manager Rod Lobwein said Ergon had selected the line route after considering the constraints and comments from community members.
"We appreciate the constructive role ULOG (the United Land Owners Group) played in assisting us to develop the section of the line route in the Massie, Toolburra, Leslie and Allan regions to have the least possible impact on their communities, even though they remain opposed to having the line in their area," Mr Lobwein said.
"We understand some property owners within corridor five have been concerned since the Community Reference Group's recommendation was released and trust the selection of a specific line route will ease the concerns of many of them.
"We are now waiting on an independent report we have commissioned to ensure this line route does not impact on future plans for the Warwick airport before proceeding to the next stage."
Mr Lobwein said the next stage was to work with the community to re-evaluate the five line routes to ensure the most suitable route was selected.
"Now we have a fifth line route, rather than just a corridor, it is possible to more accurately make those comparisons and some additional criteria also have been identified that will be considered," he said.
An Ergon Energy spokesman said he was unsure how long it would take for the independent report to be released.
"I don't want to pre-empt how long that may take," the spokesman said.
"I don't want to speak for other organisations."
The spokesman said a map of the route was unable to be released because residents were still in the process of being notified of the determined route.
"We're not sure everyone is aware of the decision yet," he said.
"We want to make sure everyone is aware before we release a map.
"We don't want people to find out via the media."
A spokesman for ULOG said the group understood determining a route was part of Ergon's process, but that did not mean the group supported Ergon choosing line route five.
"We understand it is part of the process," the spokesman said.
"In saying that we unequivocally do not support a powerline being built along line route five.
"As a matter of courtesy to Council, we will not be making any more comments until their investigation is concluded."
