BRIGHT LIGHTS: Catch the fireflies at Queen Mary Falls this weekend.

LIMITED TIME ONLY: Experience the Downs’ only firefly trail

IT'S that time of year again when the Southern Downs is lit up with the rare sparkle of fireflies.

The bright critter comes out for only two weeks at Killarney's Queen Mary Falls and is truly a sight to behold, according to Killarney Tour Co's Tony Pearson.

"It's just magical. You wouldn't get a person that wouldn't just go 'that is fantastic'," Mr Pearson said.

"It's mind-blowing to see it."

While fires have cut off access to many national parks in the region, Queen Mary Falls is still open and Mr Pearson invites everyone to come down - providing they can follow a couple of guidelines.

Given the delicate nature of the fireflies, he said it was essential visitors were quiet during their trip to avoid disturbing the creatures.

Mr Pearson also advised that those who brought torches should cover them in red cellophane.

"You can't shine normal torch on them, it will shock and kill them."

It was being mindful of these conditions that would ensure the bright lights lasted for years to come, he said.

"There's only two spots in the whole of the Downs and that is super special.

"This leaves them for other people to share. With natural things like that, you've got to respect it. If not, they're gone."

The best time for seeing the fireflies is from 6.15-7.15pm at Queen Mary Falls National Park.
