Warwick Little Athletics back for the year

WARWICK Little Athletics will start for the 2015 year at Hamilton Oval on Saturday.

Centre manager Mark McGowan said prospective new members welcome on Saturday at 8.15am to register for an 8.30am start.

"We have been contacted by a family which has moved here from North Queensland keen to join," McGowan said.

The club has 82 members and three teams competed in state relay championships in Brisbane last month.

Some of the relay team members were competing at QE11 for the first time and according to McGowan enjoyed the experience.

"They enjoy getting on the big tracks where the top athletes compete," he said.

"This gives them a great chance to do something which is fun on the big field. At state relays, four children compete in each age group with the distances of the top two in field events used to determine placings.

"Olympian Sally Pearson was at the championships, she is usually there and might spend four hours signing autographs."

Late last year, Paralympic medallist Carlee Beattie returned to her hometown for a training session, signed autographs and instructed children at long jump.

"I doesn't matter how good you are, you do a lot of the same drills at juniors as in open athletics," McGowan said.

"Carlee was at the state championships last year signing autographs."

Little athletics members compete in sprints, middle distance events, jumps, throws and walks and each week will compete in a minimum five events.
