Cyclone Marcia fails to deliver promised rainfall
WHILE the rest of the state cleans up after Cyclone Marcia, residents on the Southern Downs are still desperately waiting for the forecast 100-127mm of rain that never fell.
Despite forecasts of more than 100mm of rain for eastern parts of the region, falls for the week averaged between 20 and 50mm.
Warwick SES local controller John Newley said even though the Rose City barely felt the effects of Marcia, volunteers had prepared for the worst.
"We had a number of meetings with the council and were regular briefed on the weather," he said.
"We had guys come in and we delivered sandbags to Allora, Leyburn and Killarney just in case."
While the Warwick SES crew was glad to escape the brunt of the cyclone, Mr Newley said the lower than expected rainfall totals were disappointing.
"I was very disappointed in the rainfall totals - we were hoping for at least a good 100mm without the cyclonic conditions," he said.
"We would have gladly accepted the rain."
For many locals it was better to be safe than sorry, with the grim forecast leading to the cancellation of a number of events - including the Killarney Show.
One Killarney local said the rain had not been nearly enough.
"If only we'd had enough to have made it worth cancelling our show," he said.
"It's just gone straight around us."
The highest rainfall totals for the week were recorded around the Queen Mary Falls area, with 93mm at the Head and 80mm at the falls alone on Friday.
For our local SES the attention now turns to assisting with the clean up in central and south-eastern Queensland.
"We've had quite a number of our guys put their hands up to go up and help," Mr Newley said.
"I'd imagine they will rotate teams in coming weeks - we're ready to go and assist when we're needed."
