Liverpool can sink or swim at crucial time

FOOTBALL: Liverpool defender Joe Gomez says his team is at a "make or break” point in their season, ahead of a Premier League clash with Brighton and Hove Albion tonight and a crucial Champions League match-up with Spartak Moscow on Thursday.

The Reds sit in fifth spot in the English Premier League with 26 points, behind Manchester City (40), Manchester United (32), Chelsea (29) and Arsenal (28).

Having beaten Stoke City 3-0 on Wednesday, the Merseysiders have five wins, four draws and just the one loss from their past 10 games.

Aside from the incentive of entering the top four in the EPL, Jurgen Klopp's men can also make the knockout stage of the Champions League if they can account for Spartak Moscow.

"It's going to be a make or break period in terms of challenging,” Gomez said.

"What we want to try to do is capitalise on the points available and hopefully we can keep on a decent run and get as many as we can.

"That momentum and confidence can carry you through.”

Liverpool's depth adds to Gomez's confidence.

He points to Klopp's decision to start winger Mohamed Salah on the bench for the midweek clash with Stoke before bringing him on just after the hour.

The Egypt international managed two goals in his limited time on the pitch, taking his tally to 12 in the EPL this season.

"Mo's in amazing form and the goals he brings to the team are massive for us,” the England international said.

"Not just him, our attacking force is so strong and we still had him to bring on. It shows the depth of this squad.”
