LNP funds pledge sets hopes racing

THE Warwick Turf Club, and country racing in Queensland would benefit greatly if money from an LNP pledge to fund 20 additional country race meetings a year finds its way to the Eastern Downs racing region, local turf club figures say.

Campbell Newman announced that $1 million a year for four years would be invested in country race meetings.

Spokesman for racing Ray Stevens said there would be a new racing structure under the LNP.

"The LNP will put together a board for country racing but we haven't determined the make-up at present," he said.

"There will be country racing representatives who have the knowledge to advise on country racing issues and they will help determine the allocation of the races.

"We have made a commitment to country racing to show people we understand the importance of race meets."

Warwick Turf Club used to hold up to 14 meetings a year but that number has dropped significantly in recent times.

Vice-president Garry Adcock said 2011 in particular had been a horrendous year for racing.

"The turf club now only holds six meets a year and we have had four meets washed out over the last 12 months," Mr Adcock said.

"It is a significant amount of money and the more races we could get the better."

He said the continued loss of meetings meant local trainers and owners have trouble finding clubs to race at.

"Some local horses are not able to win in the city so the prospect of having country meets funded means longevity for their careers," he said.

"There are restrictions for lower-quality horses to compete in city races and so there are some that can only race in country meets.

"If there are no race meets for them to participate in, sooner or later they will leave the sport."

The Stanthorpe Jockey Club is surviving with their one meet per year but president Neil Brunckhorst said additional meetings would help keep their head above water.

"Our annual event has been washed out for two years running," Mr Brunckhorst said.

"If we miss out on a race we are worse off financially so we'd have to keep relying on our annual event to survive."

There are a number of turf clubs in the Downs region but at this point, it's undecided how the 20 race meets would be divided under the LNP racing proposal.
