Local four top HSC results in the state
The NSW Board of Studies made the announcements yesterday.
Bridget Mulholland from Trinity Catholic College came first in dance, while fellow Trinity student India Nash came first in two courses, French Beginners and Italian Continuers.
Annabelle Elvy from Cape Byron Rudolf Steiner School came first in drama and Lars Mellick from Xavier Catholic College at Skennars Head was first in Music 1.
India, 17, who came first in two language courses, said she was shocked to have done so well.
"I really do enjoy languages," she said.
"It opens the door for you to travel and maybe work in foreign relations.
"I have travelled a fair bit and I was lucky enough to spend two months in Italy at the end of Year 10.
"I'm having a gap year and travelling through Europe, and then I'll continue to study languages at university."
Fellow Trinity student, Bridget, 18, came first in dance, and said she started dancing classical ballet when she was just four years old.
But with the start of her HSC, her attention shifted to contemporary dance.
"I was doing four classes a week, plus practising during sport, and doing work during lunchtimes," she said.
"I'm planning to go to university in Melbourne and eventually I want to study a Bachelor of Science."
Annabelle, 18, said that when she was told she'd come first in drama, she started crying.
"It was a bit awkward," she said. "I was going to go to uni, to study drama, but I didn't get in. So now I'm going to have a year off and work so that I have enough money to live, and I'll try again next year. I'll do some short films and things like that."
Lars Mellick, 18, of East Ballina, came first in the state in music.
A piano player of just "three or four years", he admitted he probably had a "bit of natural talent".
"The music course is very analytical; it's not just about performance," he said.
"I'm going to the University of Queensland to study engineering next year, but I'll always play the piano. It's a big part of who I am."
