LOCKED OUT: Bans big in Warwick venues

LICENSED venues around town are putting their foot down when it comes to anti-social behaviour by introducing strict bans - sometimes for life.

The Malt House Restaurant and Bar on Wood St has already issued 10 lifetime bans and venue manager Jake Hatton said it was proving an effective strategy.

"Before we brought in the bans we had people coming back weekend after weekend and trashing the place - breaking out toilets and taps," Mr Hatton said.

Mr Hatton has worked in licensed venues for more than three years, and said bans were a good way of ensuring the safety of staff and customers.

Warwick police acting officer in charge Lisa Self said police would be using bans to crack down on anti-social behaviour this holiday season.

She said there had been a spike in public nuisance and disorderly behaviour offences in recent weeks.

Acting Senior Sergeant Self said a standard ban is 10 days, but police had the option of extending the ban to three months and including all licensed premises in Warwick in the ban.

"That is an option that I will be taking," Act Sen-Sgt Self said.

The extended banning strategy has been used in Safe Night precincts like Brisbane's Fortitude Valley, where clubs and bars are scanning patrons' identification cards at the entrance and sharing the information with other venues.

Some think the scanning takes it too far but Warwick is yet to see such a strategy introduced.

Criterion Hotel venue manager Kylie Jenner said it was important for venues around Warwick to work together to target anti-social behaviour.

She said extending the bans to other venues meant they could avoid facing issues from the same offenders.

"If someone is banned from one licensed premises they should be banned from all of them," Ms Jenner said.

She said the response from patrons who received bans was generally positive.

"I have banned people before and once I explain why, they are fairly cooperative.

"They will often come back on a Monday and apologise."

Both venues agreed a zero tolerance attitude was the key to making sure patrons were respectful.
