Lockyer wins despite Warwick posting decent score

MITCH Siebenhausen hit 57, Shaun O'Leary 45 and Maugan Benn 38 as Warwick went down to Lockyer in the Davis Shield final at Mulgowie yesterday.

Warwick was in trouble at 4-43 before Siebenhausen and Benn added 55 for the fifth wicket.

O'Leary and Dave Walker, who made 17, added 23 for the eighth wicket and then O'Leary and James Breen added 41 for the last wicket.

Warwick finished with 207 off 48.5 overs.

Lockyer scored the winning runs for the loss of four wickets.

Jack Breen took two wickets to be the most successful of the Warwick bowlers.

Lockyer opening batsman Hobie Willmett hit five sixes in a score of 133 which set up the Lockyer victory.

He was bowled by Warwick medium pacer Paul Cantwell in the 27th over of the innings but the damage had been done.

Warwick has not lost the past two Davis Shield finals to a combination from Lockyer.

Captain Geoff Thorley said the experience in the final would be of benefit to young players like the Breen brothers, Jack and James, and Kieran Bourke.

"We dropped a couple of catches offered by the century maker and he made our bowlers pay with a lot of hard hitting," Thorley said.

"He kept finding the middle. After the game, there was talk about winning it next year.

"We have a bad record against Lockyer in finals and are due to get one up against them."

After a weekend of representative cricket, Warwick players return to club cricket this weekend.

Thorley said the Davis Shield finalists would be better for the experience.

"It was a hard day with the heat but we all benefited from it. I was really happy with the batting fightback. We were looking at 130 and then 150 and made 200."

Program
