Lonely time for Warwick's war widows

LIFE after war is rarely an easy road, especially for those left alone at its hands.

Gordon Nielson is an active member of Warwick's Legacy support group, and said there were more than 100 war widows living in our region, most of whom were living alone.

"Some of them need answers, because the ethos from their group growing

up was, you don't ask anything, and you don't put anyone out and don't expect anything," Mr Nielson said.

"When they're in their 80s and 90s they don't want to upset anyone," he said.

Mr Nielson said the mindset created a hazard for those who needed aid.

"The next thing is, they have an accident, and that's when it is a real worry," he said.

There isn't an established branch in Warwick, more a hands-on care group that can help in day-to-day tasks.

"There would be others around that haven't joined Legacy," Mr Nielson said.

"We try to help those who need it in whatever way we can," he said.

"We can go through the Department of Veterans Affairs or defer them to organisations or government departments that can provide a service for them.

"It's just to help them live at home, and the thing is, most of them are living at home by themselves and that's a big problem."

Mr Nielson said most of the war widows were more than 80 years old.

"It makes it more difficult when they get a bit of age on them," he said.

"There's quite a number in their 90s at the moment.

"We can organise an assessment of their house to see what can be done to make sure the residence is as safe as possible, and they have aids like handrails and Medi-Call, just the little things you don't need when you're younger."
