Lonesome claims the day

THE trainer of Lonesome Day, the winning horse of Race 5 at yesterday's Boxing Day races, said he was "over the moon" with the result.

Paul Nolan said the 5pm race couldn't have gone better.

"(All of us owners) come from Warwick so it's great to have a win here," he said.

"We weren't expecting this result at all, and those wins are always the sweetest.

"We had a few issues leading up to the race so we are over the moon - Lonesome Day has had more comebacks than Dame Nelly Melba."

Lonesome Day is owned by Nolan himself, as well as Ken Woodford, Gill Ott and Len Doyle.

The group bought the five-year-old as a yearling at the Magic Millions sale and he has already notched up a couple of wins in the Toowoomba circuit.

This one was a standout though, and Nolan said the track at Allman Park was in pristine condition.

"The track is great now it's had water on it; it's a very good country track," he said.

"We might try him out in Ipswich next - it would be good to try and keep him on the grass."

Race 1, the Warwick Real Estate/ Hynes Newsagency Maiden Plate (800m) was won by Significant Other ridden by Gary Geran.

In second place was Chelsea Jokic on Best Memory and Sweet Sweet Love ridden by N Yamada in third.

Shane Egan on Affirmative won comfortably in Race 2, Steele's Bakery and Cafe QTIS Maiden Plate (1200m). They were followed by Jetalong in second and Dame Judi in third.

Race 3, Hope's Spring Repairs Class B Handicap (1200m) was won by O'Bro with jockey Amanda Smith, with Sky Lucy in second place and in third place Olliewood.

Race 4, Hope's Spring Repairs Open Handicap (1200m) was won by I'll Rule, followed by Canadian Joy and Duke William in third.

In second place at Race 5, Brian Bunch Plumbing Class 3 Plate (1100m) was Fourth of July ridden by Shannon Apthorpe and in third place, Spirit at Sea.
