Long Tan Cup race day on Saturday
RACING: Top Queensland provincial trainer Ben Currie hopes to record his first Allman Park cup win with Rockabella Boy in the Warwick RSL Memorial Club Long Tan Cup tomorrow.
The meeting has attracted 65 starters, including 10 in the cup. Free admission to races for Warwick RSL Memorial Club members.
Currie heads the standings for Queensland provincial trainers this season. His mother Donna (nee Nolan) has lived at Massie, north of Warwick, and his father Mark has trained a Warwick Credit Union Warwick Cup winner at Allman Park so a cup win would be extra special for the trainer.
"Rockabella Boy has had a few wins in Toowoomba and the 1500m distance suits,” he said.
"He will be near the lead and will only carry 60kg as apprentice Nick Keal has an allowance of 2kg.”
Currie has Blue Star in race 3 and Akua in race 4 at Allman Park and rates Akua the best chance of the two.
Warwick RSL Memorial Club junior vice-president Lorraine Dent said it was good for the town to have a race meeting remembering the Battle of Long Tan in 1966.
"We want it to be a special day for our members and will have some Warwick RSL Memorial Club member's reward draws and some lucky losers draws,” she said.
"After each local race, patrons can put their losing betting tickets in a lucky loser draw with club vouchers to be won.
"We would love strong support from the community and our own members who will receive free admission to the races on Saturday. We have club members coming to the races from as far as Chinchilla and Brisbane.”
