Longest running club kicks off celebrations in Warwick
RSL clubs across the country will this year mark the organisation's centenary and it was only fitting the state's longest continuously running sub-branch kicked off celebrations.
The Warwick sub-branch, which has been running for 99 years, joined with the Allora and Killarney branches for a celebratory party earlier this month.
Blue Violets kept the tunes rolling and local illusionist Taos Poole entertained and amazed.
Warwick sub-branch president John Skinner said he was overwhelmed with the support for the event.
"It was probably the best function I have ever been to. I am tempted to nominate it for the Southern Downs event of the year," he said.
"What made it was the crowd was made up with representatives from almost every organisation in Warwick and we also had (Member for Southern Downs) Lawrence Springborg, Mayor Tracy Dobie and her husband.
"It was a really good crowd and an excellent set-up by the memorial club."
Mr Skinner said the event was the first of centenary celebrations to be held in Queensland.
The sub-branch provides an invaluable service for the community's veterans. "We have 149 members, which is up 10 this year, and we are all volunteers," he said.
"Our aim is the welfare of vets and ex-servicemen and women and we also have a number of young veterans seeking assistance from the sub-branch in relation to welfare and entitlements."
The sub-branch is open every Wednesday and the office is located at the RSL Memorial Club, King St.
