Lorenzo now 20 points clear of Stoner

CASEY Stoner has fallen 20 points behind series leader Jorge Lorenzo in the 2012 MotoGP standings after finishing fourth at Catalunya.

Starting from second on the grid, Lorenzo had a battle with Dani Pedrosa until six laps from the end when Lorenzo put the hammer down, eventually opening up a five-second gap on his rivals.

Stoner started from pole, but it was obvious his decision to go with the harder Bridgestone tyres made life tough early in the race.

He dropped as far back as sixth as those on softer tryes had too much speed, eventually working his way into fourth.

It was the first time the Aussie star had missed a podium finish since Jerez in early 2011.

The next race is at Silverstone in two weeks.
