Lost Soldier
We found a portrait of a soldier in a Salvation Army store in Ayr.
It syas "For Ruth Mauch" on the back.
From our research, we think it is Private Herbert Victor Mauch, from Yangan. He had this portrait taken and enlisted when he was 20yrs old in 1915. He was a light horseman, stationed in Egypt with the 5th Field Artillery Brigade. He was injured from a bomb after he turned back to rescue a mate. He lost his arm and leg, recovered enough to smoke his pipe, but "died from shock" two days later on 20th October 1917. He was 22 yrs old.
We are now looking for his family so we can offer them this piece of history.
