Lovell to take top spot in saloons
IT was a two-horse race in the 2011 Australian Saloon Car Series until a couple of days after round three but the leader is no longer taking part and Matt Lovell stands poised to take the title – which starts this weekend at Morgan Park with round four at the Shannons Nationals.
Effectively the South Australian and his Batteries Direct Ford Falcon AU have a 127-point advantage with three rounds to play out but it is by no means done deal.
After a two-year break from racing, Lovell has been revelling in his return – being the leading Ford competitor and taking up the challenge right to Shawn Jamieson’s Holden Commodore VT.
“Jamo’s leading the series and leaving was not what I planned at all ... but like you can plan motor racing,” Lovell said.
“I understand why he has moved on (to V8 touring cars), I would do it myself but my first priority is outside of the sport.”
Still Lovell is expecting a tough time in Queensland this weekend.
There will be also be a flock of local Falcons to contend with which are top of their game in the Queensland state championship.
