Low cloud transmits shooting from Shoalwater Bay
INTENSE gunfire coming from Shoalwater Bay over the past few days has raised more than a few eyebrows on the Capricorn Coast.
Low cloud cover has been funnelling the noise of gunfire towards Yeppoon but a defence force spokesman said once the cloud cover lifted, the noise would also disappear.
The 1st Regiment, based at Enoggera in Brisbane, have been conducting annual live fire training exercises at Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area, 100km north of Yeppoon.
The artillery exercises have been conducted for the past 20 years and will continue until Saturday.
Spokesman Paul Lyneham said these were the only large exercises conducted at Shoalwater Bay each year outside Exercise Talisman Sabre, a joint military training exercise conducted each year between Australian and US troops.
Exercise Talisman Sabre is held every second year with the bulk of exercises at Shoalwater Bay.
This year they will run between July 14 and August 2.
Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area takes in more than 4500sq km and has been used for military training purposes for almost 50 years.
