Lubben to lead Warwick Redbacks forward into new year

AUSSIE RULES: Ben Lubben has taken up the role of Warwick Redbacks president following the club's AGM on the weekend.

Lubben joined the Redbacks as a player this season, a move he said has "never looked back on”.

Lubben said he was honoured to be given the role.

"It's definitely something I wanted to do,” Lubben said.

"Midway through the season I started attending committee meetings and thought of the possibility of helping out.

"We have a number of people extremely passionate about Aussie Rules, and we just need that little bit of direction.

"I hope to guide the club, so that we can be as successful as we can be.”

The junior component of the club is something Lubben has identified as in need of improving.

"Aussie Rules isn't the most popular sport in south-east Queensland,” he said.

"With the right support from the right bodies of AFL Darling Downs and Queensland, they can help us grow.

"We'd like to target schools and get these kids involved in the sport.

"I have a four year old who will definitely be coming down, and I would love a spot for there to be a spot for him when he is able.

"It's a safe sport, especially for young players, and we always need new blood coming through the club.”

Lubben took the chance to honour previous bearers of the club, and announce some of the coaches for the 2018 season.

"Karen Clarke was the last president and husband Keith the outgoing treasurer,” he said.

"They've been involved as long as anyone can remember, and have been the heart and soul of the Rebacks for a long time.

"They will continue to hang around, which I'm very happy about.

"Peter Millard will continue to coach the senior team in division 1 next year, and Daniel Phyland will coach the under 12 and 14 sides.”
