Forces of nature: Tree destroyed by lightning strike

LUCKILY lightning never strikes the same place twice.

A tree on a property in East Warwick was struck last night.

Local resident Geoff Brennan said he has never seen anything like it.

"I can't believe the power of it," Mr Brennan said.

"It's absolutely shredded the tree and ripped it out of its foundations."

In a display of Mother Nature's sheer power a lightning bolt caused the tree to split, crack and splinter at the base with some small debris flying metres across the yard.

Mr Brennan has lived on the property for 40 years.

He said the tree has been there longer than he has.

While he didn't witness the incident he said his wife heard a large crashing sound during the storm.

"It was like a large thumping noise," he said.

"I wouldn't want to get hit by it."

Fortunately fire and rescue crews weren't needed in Warwick overnight as the storm headed east.

However more than 500 customers in the Swanfels, Yangan and Freestone areas were without power until it was restored shortly after midnight.
