Lucky kart winner on top of his second placing

KART RACING: Kurtis Tennant might live at North Maclean but that doesn't stop him heading with his family to Sandy Creek Raceway each month.

The Junior Top Guns meeting at the weekend attracted 80 drivers and Kurtis was second behind Ryan Newton in the KA4 junior class.

There was a lucky draw for a new kart and Kurtis was excited when his name came out of the box. Warwick regular Hayden Sell won a kart chassis in a free draw.

Kurtis played junior rugby league for the Greenbank Raiders before making a switch to karting two years ago. Ipswich and Warwick are his two main raceways.

"I am at a karting meeting somewhere almost every weekend,” he said.

Tennant constantly tells his mother he just wants to achieve in the sport.

"I want to do my best and get better,” he said.

As they say, practice makes perfect and he often heads to Warwick the day before a meeting for a day of practice before a club meeting.

The Junior Top Guns was a two-day meeting which club president Peter Lane rated a great success.

"The meeting ran smoothly and finished earlier than expected on Sunday afternoon,” he said.

For the third year running, there was $15,000 in prizes.

"We hope to do it all again next year but perhaps move to the second weekend of the Queensland school holidays which will also suit drivers from New South Wales,” he said.

Warwick Karting Club member Ethan Feather won the cadet 12 class. Three Warwick members were in the first three spots in KA3 junior - Jack Hotter, Zayd Tones and Thomas Cooper.
