Brilliant junior netballer Lucy is on the ball

LUCY Mantova is one multi-talented 11-year-old, qualifying for three different Darling Downs sporting teams in the past six months.

Mantova's most recent success was making the Darling Downs 11 years netball team at this week's Darling Downs Primary School Netball trials held in Toowoomba.

The trials were tough, consisting of seven half-hour games, followed by an hour and a half for the possible and probable game.

Mantova, who plays goal attack or goal keeper, was the only Southern Downs player to be selected in this year's team.

"I started playing netball five years ago," Mantova said.

"I was against some really tall players.

"I was a bit surprised when I got picked and pretty excited too.

"I tried out last year as a 10-year-old for the 11-year-old team but did not get picked."

Mantova also excels in the swimming pool, breaking records at the Clifton State Primary swimming carnivals since she was six years old.

She has competed at the Darling Downs level for the past two years at the Regional Swimming Championships and this year made the team for the state primary swimming championships.

Mantova's skills do not stop there.

The young athlete qualified for the Darling Downs Athletics team last year for her great discus ability.

However netball is her favourite of the sports.

"The other sports are always serious," she said.

"At netball you can fool around sometimes and it is a team sport."

Mantova's current thoughts are on the upcoming netball carnivals at Palm Beach and then Caloundra later in the year.

She also hopes to one day qualify for the Commonwealth Games for something.

She said she would also settle to make a state netball team or a Queensland swimming team.
