Lyon-hearted display from skipper

MANLY centre Jamie Lyon's vintage display in his side's 36-22 win over the Raiders at Canberra Stadium yesterday left him just one try short of his career-best haul of 15 in a season.

That was way back in 2001, in just his second season in first grade, when at Parramatta.

Showing no signs of slowing down this year, at age 31, the Sea Eagles skipper produced a slick left-foot step from close range to score his first try after 14 minutes, before running onto a short Daly Cherry-Evans grubber four minutes later.

While Cherry-Evans wreaked havoc down the Raiders' left-hand edge, five-eighth Kieran Foran caused plenty of headaches for the opposition on the other side of the field.

It was Foran's short-passing game that saw Peta Hiku and Jamie Buhrer benefit to give the visitors a 24-0 lead, before Joel Thompson rolled over the line to see Canberra trail 24-6 at halftime.

The Raiders fought back admirably in the second stanza, in Andrew Dunneman's first game in charge as coach.

Tries to Reece Robinson and Sami Sauiluma narrowed the gap, but Anthony Watmough's reply, and another four-pointer to Sea Eagles winger Jorge Taufua after 71 minutes, consigned the hosts to their fourth-straight defeat, badly damaging their finals hopes.
