Lyons St attracts Leyburn producer

RURAL business may be the motive for some to return to the Warwick pig and calf sale each week.

For others, the Lyons St sale yards are just as much a social venue as they are a trading space.

Leyburn residents Natalie Thomas and Damian Harrigan caught up with Alan Rumley at the weekly sale yesterday.

Despite not having sold sheep or pigs at the sale for months, Mr Rumley still frequently visits the sale.

"I'm retired so I've just got a bit of a hobby farm," he said.

"I just like meeting all my mates and catching up with friends.

"Damian looked at my lambs yesterday and said I should get rid of them a bit later on when they're a bit fatter, probably when the grass runs out."

Mr Rumley said his pigs would also take some time to bring to market.

"One of my sows has only just farrowed this morning and another one has five piglets that are only about a month old," he said.

"It could be a bit longer until they're ready for sale."
