Good Samaritan allegedly assaulted, had his car stolen

UPDATE:

HE PULLED over to help but instead he was allegedly assaulted, had his car stolen and was run over.

A Mackay resident is being treated at Mackay Base Hospital after he stopped to help a person who allegedly had just crashed a stolen ute into traffic lights at the intersection of Sams and Willetts Rds about 7am yesterday.

It's believed the man who crashed the utility assaulted the man trying to help him, then ran over his leg as he was stealing his Landrover Discovery to flee the scene.

The Landrover Discovery, which was seen being driven down Willetts Rd, was later found abandoned just west of Mackay.

The daughter-in-law of the 63-year-old Mackay man in hospital has made an urgent plea to residents to come forward with information so police can catch the culprit. "If anyone has seen anything, they need to come forward," she said. "He is a dangerous man who needs to be caught."

She said her father-in-law could only remember pulling up to help, saying "are you right, mate" and then waking up in the ambulance.

It's believed workers from shops nearby ran to the injured man's aid at the time.

Police said the Landrover was found yesterday about 2.30pm off a road among canefields at Dumbleton.

However, the offender had not been found, they said.
